The Investigation of the Influences on Ocular Function of VDT Workers and Environmental Factors

Abstract
VDT syndrome has been understood as the outcome of the combination of computerizing socioeconomic cultures of modern age, and it has been known to affect many workers not only on the various visual functions but some general health conditions including neurologic, circulatory, and musculoskeletal system.
We conducted a series of investigation to evaluate the influence of VDT work on the physiologic functions by means of objective ocular examinations in VDT workers in combination of questionnaire application with the control of non-VDT workers.
It revealed that the susceptibility in occurrence of impairment of ocular functions like asthenopia as well as the disturbances of motor, circulatory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems were more pronounced in the VDT workers¢¥ group than the control group, and it is more so while the environmental factors of working hours, air pollution, and noise were inducing, with statistical significance.
Prolongation of near point, decreased accommodation amplitude, myopic shift of refractive condition, and decreased amount of tear formation in reference with asthenopia also were significantly indicative in VDT workers¢¥ group.
The above listed functional disturbances could deteriorate not only working efficiency but general physical condition severely if appropriate measures for improvement were not provided in lengthy period. Therefore, it is firmly suggested that the implementation of comprehensive epidemiological study in association with the improvemental task of working situations for VDT workers in long term advocated.
